Colder weather is (hopefully) around the corner, which means cold and flu season is coming up. Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory disease caused by different strains of viruses. The flu spreads mainly by tiny droplets when the infected people talk, cough, or sneeze. The disease can be spread one day before symptoms appear and as long as five days after symptoms appear.
Your best chance of protection against the flu is getting your flu shot as soon as it is available. Every year, a vaccine is distributed against the current string of influenza. Once you get the shot, your body starts producing antibodies to develop in the body. These antibodies offer protection against infection with the viruses used to make the vaccine.
After receiving the vaccine, the best way to stay healthy is to wash your hands properly. This means wetting your hands with water and applying a generous amount of soap. Next, rub your hands really well for at least 20 seconds, covering all surfaces, such as between your fingers and under your fingernails. Rinse all the soap off with water and then dry thoroughly with a clean hand towel or disposable paper towel.
Other steps to take to prevent the spread of germs include:
- Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.
- Avoid or minimize contact with sick people.
- Stay away from others as much as possible when you are sick.
- Cover your nose and mouth with tissues when you sneeze or cough. If you don’t have tissues, cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow.
Practicing health habits is another excellent way to bolster your body’s immune system against viruses like the flu. These include drinking plenty of water, eating a well-balanced diet, exercising often, managing stress, and getting enough sleep and rest. Following all these steps is the best way to stay healthy throughout flu season.
