Treat Your Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is pain that continues to linger for more than three to six months and is a widespread problem among adults of all ages. It is incredibly debilitating and affects many aspects of a person’s life.

What Causes Chronic Pain

Chronic pain often starts with an injury or painful condition such as:

  • Muscle strains and sprains
  • Arthritis and joint problems
  • Repetitive stress injuries
  • Nerve damage
  • Broken bones
  • Surgery

According to WebMD, the roots of chronic pain are both mental and physical, with some doctors and experts believing that people with this condition have a problem with the system of glands and nerves the body uses to handle stress, which, in turn, makes them feel pain differently. It can affect both men and women of all ages.

How to Treat Chronic Pain

The most effective and standard treatment for chronic pain is to provide symptom relief and support. Often, this includes seeing multiple healthcare professionals, including orthopedists and orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists, neurologists and neurosurgeons, physical therapists, psychologists/psychiatrists, and occupational therapists. Once the cause of the pain has been determined and a team put together to help with relief, a pain management program is created to meet your unique needs. Common program treatments include:

  • Cold or heat treatments to reduce stiffness and pain, especially with joint problems such as arthritis
  • Exercise to reduce spasticity, joint contractures, joint inflammation, spinal alignment problems, or muscle weakening and shrinking to prevent further problems
  • Injection therapies, such as steroid injections
  • Physical and occupational therapy, such as massage and whirlpool treatments
  • Medicines, both over-the-counter and prescriptions
