Infertility Awareness and Treatment

National Infertility Awareness Week, NIAW, was founded in 1989 by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. The goal of NIAW is to reduce the stigma around infertility, educate the public about reproductive health and issues that make building a family so difficult for so many, empower those struggling, and support those in need.Infertility Awareness and Treatment

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, roughly 1 in 6 people worldwide are affected by infertility. This also doesn’t include those who choose to parent without a partner and the many LGBTQ+ couples who need assisted reproductive treatments to start and grow a family.

Treatment Options

There are a multitude of different treatments out there, which can be overwhelming when starting this journey. By educating yourself about the options out there and what they entail, you’re creating a solid foundation towards staring/building a family.

Options:

  • Intrauterine Insemination – Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is the placing of sperm into a woman’s uterus when she is ovulating. This procedure is often done in conjunction with ovulation-stimulating drugs.
  • Medications – Your physician/RE/OBGYN will often prescribe a hormonal cocktail of medications to help with your specific treatment plan.
  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – A technique where a woman’s eggs and man’s sperm are combined in a special laboratory in order to create an embryo(s).
  • Genetic Screening and Testing – This is often recommended for couples who have had multiple failed IVF transfers, recurrent pregnancy loss and a known family history of genetic risks.
  • Donor Options – Donor egg, donor sperm, and donor embryo can help you build your family.
  • Surrogacy – In the process, the person or couple, called the intended parent(s) or (IP(s)), contract with a surrogate or gestational carrier to carry the pregnancy. Simply defined, a surrogate is a woman who carries a pregnancy for another person or couple.
