We celebrate with illustrative colors, decorative floats, vibrant parades, prismatic parties, and scrumptious picnics, but have you ever wondered about the history behind the month-long celebration?
The fight for Pride started within the walls of one of the most popular gay bars, the Stonewall Inn, in New York City on June 28, 1969. Throughout the state it was illegal until 1966 to serve alcohol to an openly gay person and in 1969 homosexuality was still considered a criminal offense—this subjected establishments like the Stonewall Inn to police raids and brutality.
What police surely thought would be a one-off raid turned into a six-day conflict where they were met with resistance by those they were trying to interrogate and detain. The Stonewall Uprising was a turning point for the Gay Liberation Movement and one short year later the first Pride March was held in New York City on June 28, 1970.
The Stonewall Uprising truly set the foundation for Pride Month and the LGBTQIA+ community. In 1999, President Clinton officially declared every June in the United States as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. In 2009, President Obama proclaimed June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. Most recently, President Biden announced June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Pride Month.
