Aging Gracefully in Your 40'sDiet and Exercise

You should continue your diet and exercise regimen throughout this decade. You may notice that as your joints, bones, and muscles start to weaken, you need to adapt some of your workouts. Focus on strength exercises during this time, as they will help to keep your muscles and joints strong and bones protected. Local Addison Athletic Club offers a wide variety of recreational, health, fitness, and athletic programs for Addison residents only. It’s also a good idea to start supplementing calcium and vitamin D to help with bone strength.

Physical Health

When you hit your 40s, your risk of high blood pressure and diabetes goes up, so it’s important to screen for both at regular doctor’s appointments. Men at this age should also screen for prostate cancer. Visit Baylor Scott & White for a wide variety of medical services and to make sure you’re staying up to date on appointments and screenings. If you’ve never needed glasses or contacts before, that may change in your 40s. Eyesight begins to deteriorate during this decade, so it’s important to see an optometrist.

Oral Health

Continuing with proper oral health habits is the best way to prevent tooth decay and mouth disease later in life. Continue brushing, flossing, and seeing the dentist throughout your 40s.

Mental Health

Although mental health tends to improve throughout most people’s adult lives, it’s still important to maintain proper sleep and manage stress. See a sleep or mental health professional if you have issues with any of these things. Addison Internal Medicine‘s Sleep Specialists are a great resource to ensure you’re getting the sleep your body needs.Aging Gracefully in Your 40's

Skin and Hair Care

It’s a good idea to visit a dermatologist in your 40s to screen for skin cancer. Continue to use SPF every day to avoid further sun damage to your skin. Retinol and vitamin C serums are recommended in your 40s to help with skin elasticity and maintain a youthful glow. If you’re interested in stronger skin solutions, micro-needling and laser resurfacing facials through an esthetician can help improve skin texture and dark spots. Hair care also becomes more important, as you may want to consider hair thinning treatments and hair dye for grey hairs.
