Known as the unofficial start to the summer, Memorial Day is the perfect long weekend. It is important to remember the reason behind the holiday, honoring those who have lost their lives in service to the U.S.A. There are plenty of ways to spend the holiday: whether swimming in a pool or lake, firing up the barbeque and cooking a delicious meal, or simply relaxing at your house. If you don’t yet have plans for this year, here are some fun and relaxing ideas on how to spend Memorial Day.
Create & Send a Care Package
Memorial Day is about honoring all our heroes – past and present. If you want to help and support a current military member, put together a lovely care package. The non-profit organization Support Our Troops boxes up all these sweet gifts from around the country and sends them overseas to our military. According to their website, you can send either a box with all the same type of goods (NOT assorted) or a $25 credit card gift card. The gift cards are the most requested because it is what they use to get on the satellite to talk with their loved ones. Visit https://supportourtroops.org/care-packages for more information.
Spend Time Outdoors
Provided the weather is pleasant all weekend, Memorial Day is the perfect opportunity to enjoy nature outside. Due to the period of the year, that dreaded Texas summer heat is quite sweltering just yet. As such, you can be out without feeling like you’re dying. You can set up a game of corn hole, horseshoes, or washers in your yard or head to one of Addison’s many beautiful parks for a tasty picnic. The opportunities are endless!
Craft a Memorial Day Poppy
In 1920, the red poppy became the national sign of remembrance for fallen heroes. As a sign of hope, these vibrant flowers can grow in even the most inhospitable conditions, such as the war-torn, destroyed landscapes of World War I. Today, many people wear these flowers on their hats, bags, and clothes. If you want to make your cute little poppy pin, follow this tutorial on Hey, Let’s Make Stuff. It’s an easy yet fun thing to do with your kids or by yourself!
Watch the Memorial Day Concert
Every year, PBS hosts a star-studded concert on the Sunday before Memorial Day. This annual event honors the military service and sacrifice of all our men and women in uniform, their families, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. This year, the concert will be on Sunday, May 29th at 7 PM CST and includes moving tributes, live musical performances, and so much more.
Go to Texas Rangers Game
This Memorial Day, take your family out to the ballpark and watch the Texas Rangers take on the Tampa Bay Rays. The first pitch is set for 7:05 PM in this first of a two-game series. There are still plenty of tickets available, ranging from $9 to $298 per person, depending on the location of your seats. This game is the perfect way to cap off a fabulous Memorial Day weekend!
