What to Do if Your Property Was Damaged During the Winter Storm

Even though the beautiful sunny weather in Addison this week is so different from the winter storms that covered Texas in snow and ice last week, many people are still recovering from damages to their homes and property. Recently, Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) encouraged all Texans to complete the Self Reporting Damage Survey. This will help the state identify damages across Texas and help emergency management officials gain an understanding of damages that occurred during the recent winter weather. The data is also needed to provide information to FEMA and highlight the need for federal disaster assistance for individuals.

“I urge Texans to fill out the Self Reporting Damage Survey and provide crucial information on the winter weather impacts to their home or property,” said Governor Abbott in a statement. “The information gleaned from this survey will help our state identify the full impact of this winter weather and help emergency management better serve Texans.”

The voluntary survey, available in both English and Spanish, can be accessed by visiting: www.TDEM.texas.gov/warm. Reporting damage to the Texas Division of Emergency Management is a voluntary activity, is not a substitute for reporting damage to an insurance agency, and does not guarantee disaster relief assistance.

The White House also approved a Major Disaster Declaration in 77 Texas counties, including Dallas County. Individuals who sustained losses due to the winter storms and do not have insurance can now apply for federal assistance. If your property was damaged in one of the designated counties and you don’t have insurance, apply for assistance now:

Additionally, the Town of Addison’s Building Inspection Division and the Addison Fire Department are currently prioritizing inspections for freeze break repairs. Minor plumbing repairs will not require a permit. Major repairs to plumbing systems (pipe replacements 6+ feet) and other building elements will require a permit.

To confirm building permitting and inspection needs, please call 972-450-2880. For fire sprinkler questions, please call 972-450-7221.
