Temperatures are hovering around the century mark daily, and we need to find ways to cool off as soon as possible. Fortunately, we have a delicious and frosty holiday coming up. July 19 is National Ice Cream Day! The holiday was declared by former President Ronald Reagan in 1984 and has since been celebrated every third Sunday in July. According to National Today, “Reagan wanted to commemorate a treat enjoyed by over 90 percent of the US population. In 1984, he decreed a day for ice cream and his proclamation actually glorified the dairy industry in America.”
The question is, where should you celebrate this most delicious holiday?
How about Marble Slab Creamery? Made with fresh ingredients from local farms and hand-crafted in small batches, Marble Slab Creamery lets you make your own custom creation with Unlimited Mix-Ins. Add fruit like bananas or pineapple then throw in some candy bars like Butterfinger or M&M’s, add some nuts and enjoy! There are lots of toppings and flavors to choose from at Marble Slab.
Creamistry at the Village on the Parkway offers custom scoops of delicious ice cream with your choice of size, base, flavor, and toppings! If you are unsure of what flavors you would like to mix, try one of their Signature Creations like Chocolate Combustion, Cookie Monster, or the Elvis Presley.
Stop at Häagen-Daz while you shop at Galleria for a special treat. Try the Banana Split Dazzler; vanilla ice cream layered with bananas, pineapple, strawberry and hot fudge, then topped with whipped cream and a cherry on top! Or how about the Rocky Road Dazzler: Rocky Road ice cream layered with hot fudge and chocolate cookie pieces and topped with whipped cream and chocolate cookie crunch. Don’t worry about the calories, you can walk them off as you shop around the mall.
Finally, one of my family’s favorite, Braum’s. Going to the Braum’s north of Addison Airport on Trinity Mills and Midway to grab a cone or sundae and then parking our car by the airport to watch the planes land and take off is one of our summertime traditions. Countless flavors and combinations make Braum’s a great place to celebrate National Ice Cream Day.
