In the last few months while we have sheltered at home, we have watched a number of movies. One of our favorite things to do as a family is to go out to the movies, get a big bucket of popcorn, and enjoy the latest blockbuster. While we may not be able to go out and enjoy a movie right now, we make the best of it by watching different movies on Netflix and making a delicious bucket of popcorn to share. Our kids love popcorn and it is one of the things we miss about the movie theater experience.
So how can we make the movie night popcorn experience better? I’m glad you asked. We have gone out and searched for delicious and mouthwatering popcorn ideas that we can all try on our next movie night at home.
If you have never made popcorn at home, it’s very easy. You will need a ¼ cup of vegetable oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Place a couple of kernels in the pot and as soon as the first one pops, add about ¾ cup of kernels to the pot and cover. As the kernels being to pop, shake the pot occasionally and when the popping stops, take the pot off of the heat and transfer the popcorn to a large bowl.
Now, let’s talk about adding some different flavors to the popcorn.
First, let’s talk about the classic movie theater popcorn. Buttery and salty to perfection, this classic recipe will make you feel like you are at the movie theater ready to watch a premiere. Melt one stick of butter in a small saucepan over low heat, drizzle it over the freshly made popcorn and toss it with 2 teaspoons of kosher salt. Very easy to make and very tasty as well.
If you like spicy food, try this Sriracha-Lime recipe. Whisk 5 tablespoons of melted butter with ¼ cup of Sriracha, 1 ½ teaspoons of grated lime zest, and 1 tablespoon of lime juice. Drizzle it over the popcorn and toss.
This next recipe comes to us from Orville Redenbacher’s! It’s a sweet and spicy trail mix that everyone will love.
You will need:
- Non-stick cooking spray
- 1 bag of Orville Redenbacher’s Gourmet Naturals Simply Salted Microwave Popcorn
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/3 cup honey
- 2 cups Pretzel Twists
- 1 cup whole almonds
- 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds, roasted and salted
- 1/4 cup sunflower kernels, roasted and salted
- 1 pkg (1.5 oz each) freeze-dried mango slices
Preheat oven to 275°F. Spray a large rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray. While the oven heats up, pop the popcorn and remove all un-popped kernels and pour popcorn into a large bowl.
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat and stir in salt and spices. Cook 30 seconds. Stir in honey and bring to a boil and then remove from heat.
Pour pretzels, almonds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower kernels into the bowl with the popcorn. Pour syrup mixture over and toss it until it’s well coated. Pour onto the baking sheet in an even layer and bake for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. Let it stand until it has cooled and the glaze has hardened. Lastly, stir in the dried mangos. You can store the leftovers in an airtight container on the counter for up to three days.
