Ways to Boost Your Immune System

In addition to washing your hands often, using hand sanitizer, wearing masks and gloves, here are some ways you can not only protect yourself, but also boost your immune system.

Get Enough Sleep

It is recommended that you get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. If you have only a few hours of sleep or the sleep you get is inadequate, it can lead to an increased risk of developing an illness. Getting the right amount of sleep helps strengthen your immune system by allowing it to rest and replenish. If you do develop a sickness, you will find that you will sleep more to allow your body to better fight the illness. If you are having trouble sleeping, some tips you can try include taking melatonin or another sleep aid, going to bed at the same time every night, using a sleep mask or limiting the amount of light in the room you are sleeping in, and exercising regularly.

Exercise Often

Engaging in moderate exercise can give your immune system a boost. You should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week or 30 minutes, 5 days a week. Examples of moderate exercise include walking, hiking, bicycling, swimming, and jogging. Experts suggest that you do some strength training, such as lifting weights, in addition to cardio. By exercising, you reduce inflammation in the body and help your immune cells regenerate regularly.

Stay Hydrated

While this might not always help your body fight viruses, germs, and diseases, staying hydration is important to your overall health. Staying hydrated is crucial to the prevention of dehydration, headaches and generally feeling poor. It can also hinder your ability to focus, the improvement of mood and physical performance. In order to not get dehydrated, medical professional state that, on a daily basis, you should drink enough water to have your urine be a pale yellow or almost clear color.

Take Supplements and Vitamins

Certain vitamins and supplements can help your strengthen your body’s immune system. Various vitamins and supplements such as vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc are important to helping shore up the bones, bolster your immune system, heal wounds, convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage.
