If you are anything like me, there are some weekends when all you want to do is curl up on the couch, wrap yourself in a blanket, have some candy and snacks by your side (and maybe a pet or two) and watch some nostalgic movies. Here is a list of throwback movies you should binge-watch this weekend.
JAWS – 1975
A timeless thriller, JAWS is about a man-eating shark that attacks residents of a small, beach-town community, leading to the local sheriff teaming up with an old seafarer/professional shark hunter and a marine biologist to hunt the beast down. Considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, JAWS has entranced and horrified viewers for over 40 years. It’s the movie that made viewers afraid to go into the water, for fear of getting attacked by a great white shark. It’s also an amazingly well-made, well-acted film that is sure to leave you at the edge of your seat.
The Princess Bride – 1987
Although it had a modest run during its time at the box office, The Princess Bride has become a cult and fan-favorite film in the years since. Told in a narrative style as a fairy tale book being read by a grandfather to his grandson, the movie focuses on a farm boy, Wesley, who goes on a series of adventures (and meets some memorable allies) in his quest to be reunited with his true love, Buttercup. Immensely funny and highly quotable, this is a great movie to watch to escape from reality.
10 Things I Hate About You – 1999
A modern take on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, this film is set in an American high school setting. A new student becomes smitten with a popular teenager, but cannot date her until her ill-tempered older sister does. As such, he enlists the help of a bad boy to date the older sister. Funny, charming, and relatable, 10 Things I Hate About You shines a light on a person’s feelings and how deep and surprising those feelings can be.
Jurassic Park – 1993
The first film in the tremendously successful franchise has cemented its place in viewers hearts for many years now. Set in a sci-fi world where a wealthy businessman and genetic scientists have created a park full of no-longer-extinct dinosaurs, a small group of visitors struggle to survive and escape the island after sabotage and accidents lead to a shutdown of the power and security precautions. Jurassic Park is full of great specific effects and plenty of action, with some hilarious and quotable lines sprinkled in.
