You can’t live in Addison (or anywhere else in the world) without hearing about the Coronavirus. No, it has nothing to do with Corona Beer. Yes, it is something that could affect you, even if you have never been to China. Keep reading for the most important facts about this disease.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-2019 is a novel coronavirus that was first investigated at an outbreak in Wuhan, China. The greatest rick of infection is for people in China or those who have traveled to China. Risk of infection is dependent on exposure; close contacts of people who are infected are at greater risk of exposure, such as close contact with those infected with the virus or health care workers.

Symptoms of this virus include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

Complications of this virus can lead to pneumonia in both lungs. If you are sick, there are certain steps you should take to stop from spreading the illness to others such as:

  • Staying home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue away
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

As far as protecting yourself, there are easy actions that you can take everyday to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses such as avoiding close contact with sick people, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, and washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

There is currently no vaccine for the Coronavirus. If you have these symptoms, please seek medical care to help relieve symptoms.
