“Hail Holy Queen” – Sister Act is coming back to town! It made you laugh as a movie in 1992 starring Whoopi Goldberg, and it will make you laugh again this month in musical form when Sister Act shows at WaterTower Theatre Oct. 24-Nov. 10.
Sister Act is a divine musical comedy, which the Associated Press called “a musical that hits all the right spots.” It is about Deloris Van Cartier, a disco diva who happens to witness a heinous murder. She is put into protective custody in the one place police are sure she won’t be discovered: a convent!
However, it’s not all sunshines and Bibles for Van Cartier. She can’t seem to conform to the nun’s rigid lifestyle and often finds herself at odds with Mother Superior. However, her unique flair and talent for singing help her inspire the choir, breathe new life into the church and touch the community. Although she is a positive, hilarious light to everyone, her vivacious attitude blows her cover: soon her gangster boyfriend and his cronies realize where she is hiding.
If you enjoy powerful gospel music, amazing dance moves and a heartfelt story, then Sister Act will have you on your feet, hands in the air, rejoicing in the power of sisterhood!
Sister Act was written by Alan Menken, Glenn Slater and Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, and is directed by Cheryl Denson. It has a two-hour and 30-minute run time with a15-minute intermission.
Showtimes include Pay What You Can Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m, followed 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. on Sundays, and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Guests are also invited to the special ASL performance on Thursday, Nov. 7. Tickets are $41 for general admission seating.
