DIY Halloween Costume Ideas Inspired by Pop Culture

DIY Halloween Costume Ideas Inspired by Pop CultureIt’s almost Halloween — a time to be creative, fun, silly and downright spooky! A person’s costume reveals a lot about him or her: the quiet woman who is obsessed with horror movies, the serious man who secretly loves making people laugh. This year, skip the party stores and show off a DIY Halloween costume, inspired by pop culture! You can recreate these looks from props you have at home, or from items available in the North Dallas Corridor. Here are some of our favorites.

Joker from Joker

Joker premiered this month in movie theatres, revealing a previously unknown origin story of Batman’s notorious archenemy. Whether you love him (or love to hate him), you can’t deny the truth: the Joker is one awesome Halloween costume! Recreate his look by wearing a red suit, like this jacket ($228) and pants ($98) from Express. It is slim-fitting, yet stretchy, so you have plenty of room for dancing and moving around your party. Complete the look by painting white makeup over your face, covering your lips and cheeks with a red-lipstick smile and dyeing your hair with a temporary green dye, like the Poser Paste in Kowabunga Green ($18 from Sephora).

Taylor Swift from “You Need to Calm Down” Music Video

Who doesn’t love Taylor Swift? The reigning queen of pop music recently released her seventh studio album, Lover, featuring the catchy, upbeat bop “You Need to Calm Down”. Fans and critics fell in love with the song and its music video, which one the 2019 MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year! Dress up like Tay by donning her iconic hot pink fur coat and cat-eye sunglasses (don’t forget to curl your hair and sip a martini as well!). Recreate the look with this Alice + Olivia faux fur coat ($550 from Neiman Marcus) and bejeweled MCM cat-eye sunglasses ($426). You’ll look great — and have a great time telling people (read: haters) to calm down all night!

Cat from Cats

Meow – you will look fierce as a cat this Halloween! Whether you have a feline friend at home, or you are just really excited to see the first-live action remake of the musical Cats premiering this Christmas, you will love dressing as a cat! Start with a black bodysuit, like this turtle-neck option from Francesca’s ($34). From there, wear a pair of sheer tights, paint your nose black and add with wispy whiskers to your cheeks. Complete the look with a cat-ear headband, like this light pink option from Francesca’s ($16). You’re outfit is purrrr-fection!

2001 Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears

With all the throwback fashion popular right now – crop tops, mom jeans, scrunchies – why not do a little throwback Halloween costume? We’re talking 2001 Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears — denim edition. Recreate this iconic look by wearing a matching jean outfit with your boo. Ladies, slip on the 7 for all Mankind denim jumpsuit ($289 from Neiman Marcus), which is a full-body jean outfit featuring a matching denim belt. For the guys, rock your favorite pair of jeans topped with a jean jacket on top, like the Purple Trucker Jean Jacket in light-washed blue ($275). Spend the rest of the night singing old school pop tunes and never apologizing for your unlimited amount of selfies (just say: “Oops, I did it again!”).
