Amy has it right, waffles are an important part of the breakfast routine. Fluffy, just a bit crispy on the outside, topped with butter and syrup. Give me all of that. Did you know that the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron dates all the way back to Aug. 24, 1869! To honor that fateful day, Aug. 24 is recognized as ‘National Waffle Day.’
“Where should I celebrate National Waffle Day?” you may ask. Let me help you out and suggest a few places.
Let’s start with arguably the most well-known place for waffles nationwide. Waffle House. Open 24/7, the cooks at Waffle House are always ready to serve you their famous waffles. Whether you get their original or one of the flavored waffles (chocolate chips or peanut butter), you will not be disappointed. Our local Waffle House is conveniently located on Marsh Ln. just south of Belt Line. www.wafflehouse.com
Next, let’s go down the road to IHOP. While the International House Of Pancakes may be known for pancakes, they cook up some very tasty waffles. Giant Belgian waffles or Chicken and Waffles, you can’t go wrong here. www.ihop.com
At Ida Claire, the menu features southern classics with an international twist. They are known for their amazing brunch menu and their Chicken and Waffles. It’s a bacon laced waffle with sunny eggs, crispy tenders, hot sauce butter, coffee maple syrup, and black pepper gravy. If you prefer something a little bit different, try the Waffle Benedict; bacon laced waffle with a braised short rib, spinach and Fresnos, hollandaise, sunny eggs, and seasonal fruit. Definitely not your normal breakfast waffle, and one hundred percent delicious. www.ida-claire.com
Finally, one of my favorite breakfast spots. Pete’s Café. This is real home cooking and the waffles are no different. Giant Belgian waffles served with eggs, bacon or sausage. You can also order a plain Belgian waffle and add apple, blueberry or strawberry compote, and whipped cream. Make sure to follow Pete’s Café on Facebook.
Celebrate National Waffle Day this year with one of these delicious waffles and let us know how you liked it!
