Dallas Medical Center Hosts Dash for Dignity

Runners of all levels are encouraged to participate

The feeling of sweat dripping down your back, wind gently rustling your hair and your heart rate pounding in your chest quicker each second is unlike any other. Those are the experiences you will have when you sign up to run or walk in Achieve’s 24th Annual Dash for Dignity, presented by Dallas Medical Center (DMC) on October 7 at 8:30 a.m.

Dash for Dignity is a 5k run, half-mile fun run, carnival and health fair, with proceeds benefiting Achieve, a nonprofit organization that works to empower adults with disabilities to achieve their highest level of independence and employment. In addition, the Dash promotes the importance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (October), which raises awareness about disability employment issues.

“Last year Dallas Medical Center was one of the larger sponsors of the Dash, and we really loved seeing how people came together to support Achieve,” said JT Barnhart, CEO of Dallas Medical Center. “This year we’ve taken our involvement to the next step by becoming the presenting sponsor for the Dash for Dignity. We love supporting Achieve and its mission, and we saw this as an opportunity to really engage our community too.”

Bring the kids and your friends to this event that will have activities everyone will enjoy! Dallas Medical Center worked with their contacts to bring a street carnival and health fair to the event this year. The carnival will have many games, an obstacle course, an animal adventures show from the Dallas Zoo, a dunking booth, a photo booth, bounce houses, face painting, a cake walk and more. The health fair will have many booths promoting health and wellness, offering demonstrations, information, drawings for prizes, and free screenings for things like blood pressure checks, bone density scans, blood sugar testing, nutrition information and more.

Sports anchor at KDFW FOX 4 Mike Doocy has served as the Dash Emcee since 1993, and has supported the Dash with his wife, Ruth, since then. He will broadcast live from the event, present the awards and interview the Dash winners!

Awards for the 5k race include Top Overall Male and Female, Top Overall Masters Male and Female Over 40, Top 3 Male in Female in several different age groups, Top Team Registrations, Top Fundraising Team, Team Spirit Award, and Top Sponsor a Child Team.

The 5k race begins at 8:30 a.m., the fun run begins at 9 a.m. and the awards, health fair and carnival will go from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The 5k will begin and end at the Dallas Medical Center campus at 7 Medical Parkway in Dallas, and take runners through many popular areas of Farmers Branch. Afterward, the carnival and health fair will all take place at the DMC campus.

For more than 30 years, Achieve has worked to meet the needs of adults with disabilities by providing vocational training, paid work opportunities and community placement.
