How to Exercise at the Office

A sedentary lifestyle is becoming a major health issue in many of the lives of Americans simply because our bodies are made to move.  At work, it is more and more common to stare at a computer screen while sitting at a desk. All that time sitting and working can get in the way of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

However, there are some ways to stay in shape while at the office if you aren’t able to join one of the great Corridor-area gyms. The first thing you should do is make a conscious decision of your workout goals at the office. For example, decide that every hour you will do 30 jumping jacks. Getting your heart rate up even just a little bit has been proven to fight against heart disease. Along with jumping jacks, simulating a jump rope exercise or high knees can also help.

Squats are constantly recognized as the best exercise you can do for your body and your health. The great thing about squats is they employ your entire body. Your hamstrings, glutes, hips and more are all involved while doing a squat. There are many kinds of squats that you can do like goblet squats, jump squats and back squats. All of these can easily be done at the office, right next to your desk!

Arms and chests can also be exercised with some help from your desk. You can lean your arms on the desk and do a push up. Your body should be diagonal and make a triangle with your body, the desk and the floor. Another great exercise for your arms and chest is if you place both hands on your chair arms and slowly lift your bottom off the chair. After, lower yourself back down but stop short of the seat, and hold for a few seconds.

Stretching should not be overlooked as a major benefit to your body. After you complete your desk exercise, whether it is attempting to touch your toes, reaching your arms up to the sky, make sure to hold each stretch for at least two minutes.

Whatever your exercise of choice is, make sure you commit to it. Right your goals down in a place where you see them every day. Exercising is a crucial component to living a healthy lifestyle so make it happen and exercise on!
