For countless generations, the pursuit of youth and beauty has been a part of our culture. Unfortunately, all the pursuing and happy thoughts you can muster won’t turn back the clock. While there is only so much we can do to keep ourselves in our prime, there are some ways to slow down the effects of time to a more comfortable pace.
Brighten your smile.
This is a really great way to give your look a lot of polish with minimal work. One of the clear signs of aging is tired, dull teeth, so don’t let your smile hold you back! Step 1: Head to your local teeth whitening experts, like Da Vinci Teeth Whitening, and let them make your smile dazzle.
Step 2: Go into maintenance mode and keep your teeth whiter longer. You can do everything from mixing your own whitener with baking soda and water (please talk to your dentist first!) a few times a month to making sure you chase your red wine with crunchy, raw vegetables.
Step 3: Show off your smile by choosing the right shade of lipstick. Shades that have gold or yellow undertones will bring out the yellow in your teeth, which is not ideal. Instead, choose shades with blue undertones that will make your pearly whites pop.
Minimize under-eye circles.
No one wants to look haggardly. But that’s exactly the look your under-eye circles are strutting when you don’t give them some love. Most of us are sporting some dark circles or bags, but getting rid of them is one of the best ways to instantly shed 10 years.
Conceal it. We aren’t saying you should be ashamed of your circles, but we are saying you should hide them. We suggest heading to the store and buying age-defying eye cream. The first thing you want to do is moisturize. Plus, eye cream will often fill in those pesky crevices – OK, wrinkles – in the skin so that your concealer can float on top.
Once you’ve applied your eye cream, put on a generous layer of concealer, starting in the corner of your eye to the outer corner. Blend the product into your skin gently and then apply a dusting of powder to take away any leftover shine. This will give you a flawless look, and you will be amazed at the perky person staring back at you in the mirror.
If your eye baggage is still sticking around, you may want to start applying some caffeine, which tends to shrink the dark blood vessels that give you dark circles and the liquid that gives you that puffy look. The best way to caffeinate your eyes is to soak tea bags into hot water for one minute, then put them into ice water for a few seconds. Then, for 15 minutes, lie down and place them directly on your eyes.
Get more sleep.
Many of us are not getting the sleep we need, for a lot of different reasons. Whether it’s a busy schedule or a crazy deadline or late nights out with friends, we often don’t get enough sleep. Well, all the time you think you’re gaining in your day by not sleeping is ending up right on your face.
Lack of sleep is one of the quickest and most effective ways to age your body and skin. Not to mention the affects it has on your weight (gasp!), immune system and mood. We’re all for a night out, but making a habit of getting little sleep will age you quickly. Try getting one hour of extra sleep every night and see how great your body feels!
Protect your neck.
We’re here to say that your neck and hands will tell on you. Because the skin in these areas is more delicate and exposed, they tend to show the effects of time more quickly. It’s important to be all about prevention when it comes to your hands and neck – and the best way to do that is to moisturize.
Apply a sunscreen daily to both areas, along with a gentle moisturizer. When applying to your neck, go from the base of your neck, near your collar bone, toward your chin. This lifts the skin rather than dragging it down and creating wrinkles.
Volumize and deep condition your hair.
Your hair is usually another dead giveaway of your age – but it doesn’t have to be! With the right products and techniques, your hair can be your crown jewel. The most important things to remember are to deep condition and volumize your hair. Don’t go for a flat, dull look unless you want to look flat and dull.
Once a month, deep condition your hair. With the products and heat our hair withstands every day, it’s important to care for it. This will help to prevent damage and will often repair existing damage.
Once you’ve moisturized, start styling your hair with mousse. It will hold the lift you get right after you blow dry in the morning. Apply a small amount to your roots and tips and then dry your hair upside down and away from your scalp to get even more body.
Use a round brush as you blow dry if you need some extra lift. Plus, it will give you a great shine that shows off your beautiful, moisturized locks.
Whatever your fitness regime of choice, make sure you stay consistent. Having a healthy and fit body will not only make you look years younger, but will likely keep you active and youthful longer.
Having a regular exercise routine, like Yoga, running or weight training, will change the way you carry yourself and will keep that spring in your step.
Color your hair and keep the length.
Your hair says a lot about you. It can say things like, “Look how hot I am,” or “I’m feeling tired,” or “I’m over 50!” So, decide what you’d like your hair to say about you, and then make it happen. If you want your hair to be a testament to your youth, then keep it a warm color and style it at or below the jaw line.
This rule applies especially to those of us struggling with wrinkles. If your face is naturally wrinkle-free, you will be able to pull off much shorter styles without it adding 10 years.
Exfoliating is not a cure for wrinkles – we all know that. However, regular exfoliation will give your skin a healthy glow. Even if you have wrinkles, the most important thing to focus on is the overall health of your skin. If it looks healthy, you will look healthy.
Try using an exfoliating mask twice a week. Make sure it is gentle – there is no need to give yourself a homemade chemical peel. After you exfoliate, be extra generous with your moisturizer and put a warm towel over your face. This will revitalize your skin and make you feel relaxed and beautiful.
